What to do while you wait

A few simple steps can keep everyone safe until we arrive. Only do any of this if you can do it without putting yourself at risk.

If it is safe to reach your consumer unit, switch off the affected circuit — or the main switch if you are not sure which circuit is the problem, or if there is a burning smell. Never touch exposed or damaged cables, and keep children and pets well away from the affected area. If water is leaking near sockets, lights or the fuse board, switch off at the main switch and keep clear.

Do not keep resetting a tripping RCD or breaker: it is switching off because something is wrong, and forcing it back on can make a fault worse. If you see flames or smoke, get out and call 999 first. For everything else, call us and we will talk you through it.
