House rewiring in Stevenage & Hertfordshire

Full and partial rewires for older and renovated homes, carried out cleanly and certified to BS 7671.

Rewires without the chaos

If your home has old rubber or fabric-insulated wiring, too few sockets, or a fuse board that keeps tripping, a rewire brings everything up to a safe, modern standard.

We carry out full house rewires and partial rewires across Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth, Knebworth and the rest of Hertfordshire, working room by room to keep disruption to a minimum. Every circuit is replaced, tested and certified, and we finish by fitting a new consumer unit so the whole installation is protected.

A rewire is also the right moment to add the sockets, lighting and outdoor power you actually want, so you are not chasing cables back into the walls later.

Why rewire your home

Old wiring degrades over time, and once the insulation breaks down it becomes a fire and shock risk. A professional rewire removes that risk, helps satisfy mortgage and insurance requirements, and gives you certified proof the installation is safe.

We protect floors and furniture, tidy up as we go, and leave the property clean and ready to decorate.

Signs your home needs rewiring

The clearest warning signs are old cable types. Black rubber, fabric-covered and lead-sheathed wiring all pre-date modern PVC cable and are well past their service life. If your fuse box still uses rewireable fuses on a wooden backboard, the installation almost certainly dates from the same era.

Day-to-day symptoms matter too. Sockets that are scorched or warm to the touch, lights that flicker, breakers that trip regularly, or a faint burning smell near fittings all point to wiring under stress. Too few sockets, with extension leads doing permanent duty, is another sign the installation was designed for a different age.

If you recognise any of these in your home, the sensible first step is an EICR inspection. It tells you the true condition of the wiring, so you only pay for the work the property actually needs, whether that is a full rewire or a partial one.

What happens during a rewire, step by step

Every rewire starts with a survey. We walk the property with you, agree where sockets, switches and lights should go, and plan cable routes that cause the least damage. You then receive a free, fixed written quote before any work begins.

First fix is the disruptive part: we lift boards and chase walls where needed, then run new cables to every point in the home, working room by room so you can stay in the house. Second fix follows once the walls are made good, when we install the new sockets, switches and light fittings.

Finally we fit the new consumer unit, then test every circuit to BS 7671 18th Edition. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate and the work is notified to Building Control through NAPIT, giving you the paperwork that mortgage lenders, insurers and future buyers ask for.

Rewiring FAQs

Common questions about house rewiring in Stevenage and Hertfordshire.

How much does a house rewire cost?

It depends on the size, age and layout of the property and how much rewiring is needed. We give a free, fixed quote after a quick survey, with no obligation.

How long does a rewire take?

Most homes take from a few days to a couple of weeks. We work room by room across Stevenage and Hertfordshire to keep disruption to a minimum.

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

Common signs include rubber or fabric-insulated cables, a fuse box with rewireable fuses, scorched or discoloured sockets, frequent tripping and flickering lights. Homes wired before the 1970s that have never been rewired should be inspected. An EICR will confirm the condition of the wiring before any work is quoted.

Can I live in my home during a rewire?

Usually, yes. We rewire room by room, keep power on where it is safe to do so and make sure key areas such as the kitchen and bathroom stay usable. For larger properties we agree a schedule with you before we start.

Do you offer emergency electrician call-outs?

Yes. We cover 24/7 emergency electrical work across Stevenage and Hertfordshire when something cannot wait.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. Every rewire is fully tested and you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate, with the work notified under Building Regulations through NAPIT.
